Museum Folkwang in Essen has one of the most important collections of classical modernism in Germany. Moving the “Ruhrlandmuseum” to “Zollverein”made space for the extension of the existing museum by a new building.
In consultation with bogner.cc, an international architecture competition was prepared and museological guidelines for the doubling and modernisation of the exhibition space, made possible by the new building, were developed. In 2007, David Chipperfield Architects won the invited architecture competition.
The new 55 million Euro museum building, completely financed by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach foundation, was opened on January 30th 2010.
