Frederick Kiesler’s transdisciplinary artistic concept, developed in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, not only influenced the American art scene over a period of decades, but is again today attracting great interest in international contemporary creative scene. From June 14th to October 2nd 2016, the MAK in Vienna showed an extensive exhibition, curated by Dieter Bogner, Maria Lind and Baerbel Vischer, which visualised the topicality of Kiesler’s oeuvre of paintings, sculpture, architecture, design, theatre and film. The exhibition also prompted visitors to consider his correalistic theory as well as his innovative curatorial and creative exhibition practice.
The exhibition focused on Kiesler’s historically important works from different categories, the perception and contemporary interpretation being extended through process-oriented artistic interventions and performative works by six international artists: Leonor Antunes, Céline Condorelli, Verena Dengler, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Apolonija Sustersic and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
A comprehensive catalogue was published for the exhibition, available from the MAK Design Shop.
