Modern Architecture in Central Europe
Shaping the Great City examined revolutionary architectural movements during the last decades of the Habsburg Monarchy and the first years after its dissolution. As a cultural hub of competing linguistic, ethnic, religious and national traditions and trends, the region offered a variety of fascinating urban planning and architectural concepts.
The exhibition illustrated the interrelation between common developments and regional differences, i. e., between local and national trends, also prompting visitors to consider the significance of city concepts from the early 20s to the globalisation era.
It was divided into two parts: The City as Form and Idea explored the different urban development concepts and conceptual models, which dominated design practice from 1890 until the early 1930s. Modernity, Tradition, and Place showed individual cities at times of important architectonic innovation and vibrancy.
The exhibition was on show at the following locations:
Obecní dům, Prague / CCA. Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal / The Paul J. Getty Museum Los Angeles / Kunstforum Bank Austria, Vienna
