Emperor Maximilian I is considered to be an important figure in the political and cultural change which marked the transition from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. As part of the Year of Maximilian 2019, which marks 500 years since the death of the famous emperor, the state of Tyrol and the city of Innsbruck are commemorating the Hapsburg ruler through a series of events. One of these is the project “Maximilian goes digital”.
Taking the form of digital installations, this project will provide the general public with access to the results of two research projects. A range of digital installations on the Ambraser Heldenbuch [Ambras Castle Book of Heroes] and the cenotaph in the Hofkirche have been created in cooperation with the University of Innsbruck. These will be displayed in the Golden Roof Museum, Ambras Castle and the Imperial Palace in Innsbruck, where they will be specially adapted to each location.
The media stations in the Golden Roof Museum have already been installed:
The Ambraser Heldenbuch
A tactile digital installation. Visitors can virtually browse through the magnificent bookand receive interactive, animated information on whichever page they turn to.
The cenotaph at the Hofkirche
This digital station not only gives visitors the opportunity to find out important and interesting information about the magnificent tomb, but also to view the 24 reliefs which depict highlights in the life and deeds of Maximilian and the house of Hapsburg in high definition and in great detail.
Since 11th April 2019 the media stations at Ambras Castle can be visited as part of the special exhibition “Maximilian I. Zu Lob und ewiger Gedachtnus”:
The digital staging of the cenotaph allows visitors to make a direct comparison between the reliefs on the sarcophagus and the scenes on the original preliminary drawing (the “Visierung”), which is located at Castle Ambras. Two in-depth information stations offer more information on this “Visierung”, as well as on an additional monumental work carried out by Maximilian I – the Ehrenpforte [Triumphal Arch].
Additional media stations will be available at the Maximilian exhibition in the Imperial Palace, Innsbruck, from 25th May 2019.
