In 1998, a new museum housing the Foundation Beyeler's collection of modern art was opened in the Swiss community of Riehen, north of Basel. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the structure provided the opportunity to present the entire collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler to the public for the first time. The collection encompasses works of late impressionism, documents the transition to cubism and shows works from classical modernism to expressionism. At the same time the museum functions as a centre of scientific and documentary study while also creating important impulses for the artistic life in Basel.
