The exhibition in the Artillery Laboratory titled “Emperor Maximilian I – knightly idealism and foot soldier reality” explores the transition from the age of the knight to the world of the mercenary foot soldier or Landsknecht in the waning Middle Ages. Large-format illustrations taken from historical manuscripts commissioned by Maximilian I himself are brought alive with the help of replica armour and costumes provided by the Kufstein Local History Society. This gives visitors a first-hand impression of exciting jousting scenes and striking details like the fantastic crests on the knights’ helmets. Visitors can try out a helmet, gloves and sword themselves at an interactive “knight’s table” and can test their cannoneer skills on a cannon ball trajectory flipper.
